Abstract

This paper aims to characterize the history of Brazilian Portuguese Content
Interrogatives. The study and its analysis are based on Functional Discourse Grammar principles. Mainly, we turn our attention to the constituent ordering phenomenon in those structures, and try to determine the historical and pragmatic motivations involved in the interrogative constituent and subject dispositions. In order to do so, the data are composed of theater plays from 19th and 20th
centuries.
