Abstract

The main goal of this paper is to analyze the adverbial clause of addition in order to identify its syntactic, semantic and pragmatic features. This relation is expressed in Portuguese by the prepositional phrase “além de”. The subordinate clauses of addition, which designate second order entities, are factual and have dependent temporal reference. They are of second order since they designate events that can be qualified in terms of its reality and can be located in time and space. They are factual as they present this event as real. They have dependent temporal reference because they are expressed by dependent verb forms, mainly the infinitive forms. As it concerns its patterns of ordering, the additive clauses take the pre-posed position to its main clause.
