From the Rhetoric to Argumentation: Understanding the Meaning of Words

Abstract

In this paper, we analyze the meaning of the words ‘rhetoric’ and ‘argumentation’ as employed in the work Le traité de l’argumentation. La nouvelle rhétorique, published in 1958 by Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca. Through this study, we intend to contribute to the production of an understanding about the history of the argumentation - its constitution, its formulation and its usage - in human sciences during a very specific period: the resumption of the argumentation studies in the second half of the twentieth century.
