Xanana Gusmao’s inaugural address: a semiotic analysis of discourse

Abstract

Following the principles of Greimasian Semiotics, this article analyzes the Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao’ inaugural address, in Dili delivered on May 20th, 2002, at the ceremony marking the dedication of the country as the “Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste” after the period of Indonesian rule (1974-1999) and the phase of the UN transitional administration (1999-2002). This paper aims to detect characteristics that indicate the intention and commitment of the President of
the Republic that time and evidence for the socio-historical period faced by East Timorese people. The analysis developed in this work is based on the semiotic theory proposed by Barros (2007) and Greimas (2008). It also studies the elements of discourse analysis proposed by Fiorin (2008).
