Abstract

This work has as its essential aim the characterization of the play The Importance of Being Earnest (1895), written by the Irish dramatist Oscar Wilde (1854-1900), in a way that it may permit a further comprehension of the aesthetic elements which are incorporated to the play. As it is known, Wilde was one of the major exponents of the Aesthetic Movement. His theoretical approach, thus, is founded on the principles led by this artistic movement. Therefore, a discussion is raised about how Wilde incorporated his “theory” into the realization of its “practice”, which is
specifically represented by The Importance of Being Earnest. Thus, this work proposes to make evident how the transposition of the theory into practice is done.
