A degree semantic treatment for the Brazilian Portuguese intensifiers muito and bem
Keywords:
Degree Semantics, Gradable Adjectives, Intensifiers, Bem, Muito.Abstract
Degree modifiers (DMs) change the relation between compared degrees. Brazilian Portuguese (BP) DMs do not specialize in modifying Gradable Adjectives (GAs) with a particular scale structure, but each one produces modified adjective phrases of a certain type. ‘Bem’ takes a category to which the GA argument belongs as the parameter and demands that the degree of the individual overlaps with the degree of the parameter. ‘Muito’ reminds ‘very’: the standard comes from the context and must show a distinct degree from the one the GA’s argument is mapped to.
