Abstract

This work investigates adjectival resultatives in German, i.e. causative constructions as [V DPACC AP], whose AP denotes the resulting state over the DPACC. Ex.: (1)a. Anna trinkt die
Teekanne leer - (1)b. *Anna drinks the teapot empty - (1)c ‘Anna drinks from the teapot and it ended up empty.’ The drinking event in (1)a causes the teapot to be empty; in BP, such a reading is not possible in the ungrammatical structure as in (1)b. I assume, with Kratzer (2005), that V must be intransitive and the DPACC behaves as an argument of the adjective. In order to maintain this claim, the author rules out some apparent counterexamples, in which V is transitive. I compare these examples with BP data, showing semantic and structural similarity, intending to reinforce Kratzer’s hypothesis regarding the intransitivity of V in adjectival resultatives.
