Abstract

This article discusses the dynamics of use of the interrogative ‘o que’ in Brazilian Portuguese and its variation with ‘que’, in comparison with what happens in European Portuguese, based on data obtained from a corpus of 17 theater texts from the Tycho Brahe Parsed Corpus of Historical Portuguese, covering the 18th to 20th centuries. Hypothesis related to the prescriptions of normative grammars are presented, and a comparison is made between the dynamics of variation and the attitude of grammarians on this issue. Finally, the need for research that considers the varieties of 19th century Brazilian Portuguese and the possible different normative influences is discussed.
