Abstract

This article presents a possible ancient etymology in Attic Nights (Noctes Atticae) by the latin jurist Aulus Gellius (120-180 AD). We propose an analysis based on selected passages from the work in the light of History of Linguistics (HoL), regarding the presence of a grammatical reflection not only concerning the definition and origin of words but also within syntactic and semantic aspects, aimed especially at the use of neologisms and the recovery of archaisms by speakers at that time. Thus we were able to understand the existence of ancient etymology as a possibility for reflection within the historiographical context.
