Discourse subordination in Portuguese: the interactional function transition

This article investigates, under the scope of Functional Discourse Grammar (HENGEVELD; MACKENZIE, 2008), constructions introduced by porque (because), which do not exhibit morphosyntactic or semantic dependency in relation to any immediately anterior or posterior main clause. The research aims at determining, in the varieties that assume Portuguese as their official language, pragmatic, semantic, morphosyntactic and phonological properties of these constructions and specifying their discourse function. The results permit to observe that these structures, determined in the interpersonal level of the theory, are movements that contribute to the continuation of the discourse in order to indicate content transition and establish discourse subordination relations.
