Abstract

Taking into account that we are social subjects, we can say that while expressing our discourse we build not just an individual ethos, but also a collective ethos. Based on the studies of the Argumentation and Rhetoric, the Semiotics of the Discourse and the French Analysis of the Discourse, our objective is to observe in the book Na feira de Itabaiana tem?, of Carlos Mendonça, the persuasive strategies used by him to build or to ratify discursive images of the city Itabaiana and its people. Through a typical literary manifestation which we call “literatura de cordel”, the author talks not only about the popular market of Itabaiana, a commercial and cultural symbol of the city, but also about its people, bringing to his poetry characters and situations that reveal an economically active city and a hard-working, creative, flirty and fun people.
