Abstract

The aim of this article is to compare the intonation of Brazilian Portuguese and
North-American English through the analysis of a sequence of scenes from the movie Shrek (2001). The theoretical basis of the analysis is the systemic-functional approach to intonation (HALLIDAY, 1970; CAGLIARI, 2007). The factors discussed are: the number of tonal groups, the choice of tones, the syntactic choices and the choice of semantic and pragmatic meanings. The similar situational and linguistic context made it possible to observe the choice of tones as regards syntactic, semantic and pragmatic meanings, which are the same or different in the two
versions of the same movie in analysis. It was also noted the special role played by the interpretation of the voice actors.
