Abstract

The morpheme -ra to indicate pluperfect (mandara) practically disappeared from Brazilian Spoken Portuguese, being replaced by other variants, as the periphrase ter/haver + past participle (tinha mandado) and the simple past (COAN, 1997; MARTINS, 2010). Traces of this verb form remain in formulaic constructions, such as quem me dera, tomara, quisera, pudera eu, derived from the possibility of the uses of the morpheme with modal sense. The aim of this research is to discuss the contexts of modal readings of the morpheme -ra, during the period between sixteenth and twentieth centuries, and its idiomatization in contemporary Portuguese.
