Abstract

The paper presents a critical review on the development of Variationist Sociolinguistics by assuming that its development is confronted with two major obstacles. The first obstacle concerns the inability of this research program to create a theory of linguistic structure that accounts for language functioning as a mental system. The second obstacle refers to the inability of this model to develop a holistic understanding of language change as a socio-historical process.
