Abstract

This paper presents our noted translation of the first stasimon of Sophocles’ Women of Trachis into Portuguese. The translation aims to produce a prose version accessible to first-time readers of Greek Tragedy. The introduction contextualizes the translated text and its relation to the theme of love. The notes relate passages in the translation to other parts of the work and clarify mythological references. This tragedy is based on Heracles’ myth. The stasimons are choral songs between the episodes of a Greek tragedy. The song translated (verses 497-530) narrates an event that precedes the present of the play: the battle between Heracles and Achelous for the hand of a young Deianeira.
