Abstract

This study, based on an articulation between the History of Linguistic Ideas and the Historical Semantics of Enunciation, examines the production of meanings about slavery in texts written by Confederate immigrants from the United States in the region of Americana, São Paulo. These immigrants arrived in Brazil after the Civil War, seeking to rebuild their lives and continue benefiting from slave labor. We analyzed letters, diaries, and reports to investigate how these immigrants enunciate impressions about social relations, slavery, and the Brazilian way of life. Our analyses show that these enunciations carry with them a history of enunciations about slavery in the United States, which is transposed and re-signified in the present enunciations about slavery in Brazil.
