Abstract

This study examines marked word order constructions (VS) instantiated by the verb chegar through the theoretical lenses of Usage-Based Models (Bybee, 2016; Barlow & Kemmer, 2000) and Image Schemas (Johnson, 1987; Oakley, 2007). The objective is to describe the functional properties of these constructions by establishing a relationship between constituent order and their discourse-pragmatic roles. The analysis is based on a sample extracted from the Iboruna Database (Gonçalves, 2007). These occurrences were examined according to the following analytical parameters of form and function. The findings reveal the specialization of the partially schematic microconstruction [[CHEGAR]+[SUJEITO]FOCALIZAÇÃO/ APRESENTAÇÃO] in introducing and foregrounding new referents in discourse. These referents are characterized semantically as Individuals.
