Abstract

This paper aims to identify linguistic and extralinguistic motivations for lexical and syntactic variation in the Portuguese written by students from University Eduardo Mondlane in Mozambique. The corpus analyzed contains 60 texts, produced by 60 students in the context of classroom assessments. The analysis showed that students stand in awe of writing standard Portuguese as they tended to interweave Bantu morphological rules and Portuguese morphological rules. It was observed the coexistence of standard and non-standard Portuguese in syntactic constructions. Thus, it could be concluded that some of linguistic and extralinguistic motivations for variation in written Portuguese in Mozambique are related to multilingual, socio-historical and ethno-linguistic situation of that country.
