Academic Literacies: the alliance between linguistics and ethnography

This paper proposes refl ections on the theoretical and methodological contributions resulting from the alliance between Bakhtin’s linguistic-discursive perspective and ethnographic approach from Academic Literacies as a way to investigate the integration of the subjects to academic literacy practices. In this study, the linguistic ethnographic bias is based specifically on what Lillis (2008) defi nes as “text history”, that is, the simultaneous consideration in the analysis of both the text and data from other natures that are around the text in a specific context. These refl ections are proposed from a case study that involves a qualifying exam of masters dissertation in relation to dialogue between the professors of the Qualifying Committee and a master student about her “Introduction” section.
