“É o seguinte”: boundaries between Elaboration and Projection

Abstract

In this paper, we analyse the semantic relations of elaboration and projection in spokencontemporary Brazilian Portuguese. We limit the focus of our analysis to elaboration of the NP “o seguinte”, with the goal of identifying the various types of constructions that exist with this NP and the types of semantic relations they instantiate. Within this complex clauses, structures like “é o seguinte”, “X é o seguinte” and “outros verbos o seguinte” can be found. The structure “X é o seguinte” and “é o seguinte” pointto an interpretation along the lines of elaboration. The occurrences of “outros verbos o seguinte”, may indicate more or less clearly the boundaries between elaboration and projection, which depends on the relationship between the transitivity of the verb in the first segment and the nature of the second segment.
