Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present the multissystemic approach to language, which is located on the board of cognitive-functionalist theory. In this paper we study the verb ficar according to this theory. Castilho (2007, 2009a, 2009b, 2010) proposed a new method of viewing linguistic change focusing its processes and products, organized in four blocks (i) lexicalization and lexicon, (ii) semanticization and semantics, (iii) discursivization and discourse, (iv) grammaticalization and grammar. Letters written by newspapers readers as well as personal letters from nineteenth and twentieth century’s have been analyzed in order to identify sintaticization and semanticization of verb ficar as full verb, functional verb or auxiliary verb, in the case of gerund constructions.
