Abstract

This paper examines some syntactic aspects of gerundive clauses in Brazilian Portuguese in sentences like O professor estranhou os alunos estudando física no feriado / O professor quer os alunos estudando física no feriado. We analyze these kinds of gerundives as a single clausal constituent, complements of the matrix verb. However, a closer look reveals that these constructions show different behaviors, which we associate with the fact that their matrix predicates – estranhar and querer – belong to different semantic classes: factives vs non-factives. The aim of this work is to discuss the differences between these two kinds of gerundive clauses and argue for differences in their syntactic structures.
