Abstract

This paper aims at investigating the relationship between prosody and meaning. It presents an analysis of the variation in pitch in utterances featuring the word no in a corpus that consists of 5 minutes of recorded material from the animated movie Shrek (2001), dubbed in Brazilian Portuguese. The acoustic analysis shows that the prosodic elements in speech
can show different meanings in each production of the same word, no. It was noticed that the choices in the production of intensity, length and pitch contours may convey different pragmatic meanings that go beyond the meaning of the lexical item chosen by the speakers.
