This paper aims to discuss some theoretical and methodological approaches presented in studies of the so-called “tip of the tongue” (TOT) phenomenon. After a brief introduction to the issue, a pioneer study by Brown and McNeill (1966) will be discussed, alternating with other studies that follow the same methodological framework. In the next section, other approaches that have been applied to studies of TOTs in significantly lower number, such as the diary and the self observation, will be highlighted. Finally, new discussions about procedures that are consistent with a qualitative historical-cultural approach will be proposed.Downloads
