Functionalism and linguistic change in a constructional perspective
the formation of discursive markers in Portuguese

According to Usage-Based Linguistics, in terms of Rosário and Oliveira (2016), Furtado da Cunha, Bispo e Silva (2013) and Martelotta (2011), we investigate in this article the pre and post-constructional changes involved in the conventionalization of discursive markers of Portuguese, more specifically those formed by verbal subpart and pronominal locative subpart, coded as [VLoc]MD. Such changes are addressed from the perspective of contextual cline (DIEWALD; SMIRNOVA, 2012), which leads to the insertion of these constituents in the MD paradigm, taken as a hyperconstruction, according to Diewald (2020). In a historical approach, based on qualitative analysis and taking into account productivity factors, we demonstrated that the constructionalization [VLoc]MD is initially detected in the language in the sixteenth century, but its consolidation as a MD forming scheme is generalized from the nineteenth century, via analogization (BYBEE, 2010) and contextual pressures, involving metaphorization, metonymization and expansion of intersubjectivity (TANTUCCI, 2018).
