Abstract

In this study, the perspective of Discourse Analysis, represented by Dominique
Maingueneau’s texts on interdiscourse, scenography and ethos, is adopted as theoretical reference. We analyse texts and discourses propagated by the Brazilian press about the merit evaluation system of junior and high school teachers, which was suggested by the Education State Secretariat of São Paulo in 2009-2010. In the analysed corpora the scenographies create discourses that raise polemic, which come from various social sections and outline a pre-discursive ethos of teacher
knowledge. The ethos is certified by the inter-discourse, which is related to pre-existing discourses on how a competent teacher is traditionally defined as a discursive ethos of a teacher who does not have knowledge.
