Abstract

The goal of this article is to investigate the contribution of non-linguists to the field of Lexicography, examining their linguistic production in the entries of informal dictionaries. Based on the theoretical-methodological principles regarding the organization of dictionaries, we will analyze the definitions of “coronavirus” in two dictionaries published in Portuguese, Aulete and Houaiss, comparing them to the same entry in two informal dictionaries, namely, the Brazilian Portuguese dictionary Dicionário inFormal, and the North American English dictionary Urban Dictionary. The results of the analysis show that the contributions of non-linguists to informal dictionaries work as a rupture in the production of informal dictionaries because they are not based on the value of what is right or wrong, but because they present definitions according to the discourses in the society.
