Process of conclusion of the argumentative essay

This study investigates the linguistic construction used to mark the conclusion of an argumentative essay and analyzes, from the Grammaticalization and Cognitionperspectives, the most frequent construction: therefore. To that end, we used a corpus comprising 500 essays from Fuvest (University Foundation for Admissions Tests– USP), produced in the years 2007 to 2011, as well as controlled material. Theoretically this research is based on studies on Cognition (TOMASELLO, 2003), Grammaticalization (BYBEE, 2010; TRAUGOTT, 2010) and Text (KOCH, 2002; HALLIDAY; HASAN, 1976). We have managed to validate the idea that the use of certain constructions in unexpected contexts provides a new meaning that turns to isolated contexts of use after a phase of ambiguous interpretive possibilities. One can also say that, cognitively speaking, the use of a strategy of textual conclusion reveals intentionality and joint attention from the writer to the reader.
