apiamentu and Cape Verdean Creole: possible approximations

This study compares Papiamentu and Cape Verdean Creole words in order to (i) observe if there are similarities and (ii) verify which aspects the two languages differ. Corpus for this research is formed by Freitas (2012) for Papiamentu (PAP) and by Bruser et al. (2002) for Cape Verdean Creole. The analysis shows that, indeed, the two languages share lexical and functional items, such as chukulati (PAP) e xukuláti (CV) ‘chocolate’; aínda/eínda/índa (PAP) e ainda/inda (CV) ‘still’. In words whose etymon is Portuguese, the differences between the languages are usually systematic, due to varied patterns. On the whole, the Papiamentu and Cape Verdean Creole vocabulary, especially functional, is really similar (which favors a common origin) and the Cape Verdean Creole is closer to Portuguese than Papiamentu, which has infl uences from other languages, like Spanish.
