Typological properties of argumental NP raising and its implications for the recognition of the phenomenon in Brazilian Portuguese

We work, in this paper, on the occurrence of the argumental constituent of the embedded clause in the matrix clause boundaries, a phenomenon identifi ed in the literature as raising. Our objective is to verify to what extent typologicaly-based properties apply to both types of raising identifi ed in a variety of contemporary Brazilian Portuguese: subject-to-subject raising; object-to-subject raising. Based on empirical research on a corpus of spoken language and assuming a functionalist orientation, our analyses indicate that: (i) the subject-to-subject raising is the most productive type; and (ii) the morphosyntactic and semantic-pragmatic properties analyzed are suffi cient to identify the two types of raising, but they are not included in the definitions of the typological base of the phenomenon found in the literature.
