The ideological dimension of Education in Portuguese Foreign Language and its sociocultural developments

Abstract

This article discusses the Teaching of Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PFL) taught at the Cultural Centers of Brazilian embassies, addressing two journalistic articles that accuse the Itamaraty of pressuring teachers to use the courseware Só verbos. The objectives of this work are, therefore, to show theoretical-methodological contributions of the Bakhtinian field to the PFL area and to analyze how the processes of production, reception, and circulation of courseware, as an ideological construction, reflect and refract certain social realities in this teaching perspective. The methodology used is descriptive-interpretive and anchors on the Bakhtinian dialectical-dialogical perspective, having as objects of analysis utterances taken from the material mentioned and two journalistic articles about such utterances. Based on the Bakhtinian framework, specifically in Voloshinov (2013, 2017) and Bakhtin (2011) regarding the concepts of word and ideology, the results point to: 1) A process of social legitimation that triggers the creation of wrong journalistic stories; 2) The disclosure of false information by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and 3) The emphasis on language teaching apart from social practices. It is expected, therefore, that this text promotes theoretical and interpretive reflections both in the area of PFL teaching and Languages in general.
