Formal Linguistics and Interdisciplinarity: historical and contemporary issues

Abstract

The internalist and externalist approaches have clashed throughout the history of Linguistics, drawing two types of practices. One, more concerned with the insertion of linguistic issues in the social and cultural dynamics, the other one, more concentrated in the analysis, systematization and formalization of aspects of human language and driven by theoretical-methodological models that have often flirted, throughout history, with the Natural and Exact Sciences. This second type of practices sometimes has been recognized as the most rigorously scientific branch of work in the field. However, it seems that the kind of scientific knowledge it produces has found less repercussion in the Humanities and in society. In this text, from the perspective of Linguistic Historiography, is presentaed a set of historical contingencies correlated to this frame, as well as a set of contemporary attitudes and initiatives that confront and modify them in Brazil.
