Ce travail analyse la situation linguistique de la Jamaïque dans une perspective matérialiste-historique-dialectique, en reliant langue, société et idéologie. Les fondements théoriques et la conception de la langue adoptée, intrinsèquement historique, sociale et idéologique, sont présentés. La formation sociale jamaïcaine, marquée par la colonisation, l'esclavage et la stratification sociale, et ses développements linguistiques, avec un accent sur le créole jamaïcain et le mouvement rastafari, sont contextualisés. Le créole jamaïcain, né du contact entre l'anglais, l'espagnol et les langues africaines, est devenu un marqueur d'identité ethnique et de classe. En réponse à l'oppression coloniale et postcoloniale, les rastas ont développé le Dread Talk, une pratique langagière consciemment modifiée qui articule un discours contre-hégémonique de résistance, principalement matérialisé dans la musique et la littérature.
