Abstract

The present study verifies the position of clitic pronouns, associated to a single verb, in clauses which are part of journalistic texts produced in São Paulo city and in Rio Claro town, located in the interior of São Paulo State. The period analyzed embraces the years 1880 to 1920. This spatial cut is due to the diverse profile of the locations, which are analyzed to verify probable similarities and particularities of the use of clitic pronouns in those areas. The study is based
on the theoretical and methodological purposes from the Theory of Linguistic Variation and Change, and investigates of which independent linguistic and non-linguistic variables motivate, in a sentence, a certain position of the clitic pronouns. These positions, the most relevant ones, are indicated by the absolute results, percentage and relative weights, provided by the GOLDVARB X program.
