Abstract

This study is characterized by the attempt to better know the constitution of Portuguese language teaching by taking teaching units as a focus. Our purpose is to investigate to what extent it can constitute an organizer element of Portuguese language textbook from different decades of the twentieth century in Brazil. Thus, this research is based on socio-historical theoretical perspective, which allows us to understand teaching units from a historical process. The study on textbooks in Brazil under this perspective is not only an open path to know how Portuguese was constituted as a module to be studied. In particular, it is also a path to the study on any other module that can be always determined and explained by the evolution of social, cultural and educational policies (SOARES, 1996).
