A syntactic-semantic analysis for the wipe verbs of Brazilian Portuguese

In this article, we take the BP wipe verbs as our object of study in order to show that these verbs present semantic properties and syntactic behaviors different from BP removal verbs. For this, we analyze, based on the theoretical-methodological framework of Lexical Semantics, 14 wipe verbs. In the end, we come to the results that the wipe verbs are activity verbs; they do not produce results; have the thematic grid {Agent, Patient}; have the following predicate decomposing structures: [X AFFECT Y], for the verbs of manner, and [X AFFECT Y], for the instrument verbs; can have a removal reading when they occur in the structure (SN1 (SN2 P SN3)) and accept locative alternation when they have sense compatible with the removal.Downloads
