The intendant subject and the discourse about death: an analysis on the Santa Maria (RS) of 1896

The paper analyzes the certificates of the Tome 13 of the Intendant Municipal Fund under the heading Deaths which are preserved in the Municipal Historical Archive of Santa Maria. The documents are signed by men who lived in the year of 1896, including the Municipal Intendant. From the observation of discourse, and in order to interpret what the intendant subject says about death and how he says it, from the place he occupies in local society, it is asked whether the highest figure of local authority can be said to be a “spokesperson” of the juridical power in that community.
