Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze the lexicogrammatical, the discursive-semantic, the argumentative and the conceptual configuration of the diz que… mas construction, based upon the theoretical convergence of Systemic Functional and Cognitive Linguistics, with special regard to the assumptions of Appraisal Theory and Mental Space and Conceptual Integration framework. It is argued that the construction activates, in the primary clause, a resource of dialogic expansion: distancing, responsible for the emergence of a SPEECH space, in which a generic Sayer practices an activity of self-attribution of a property, whereas, in the secondary one, the construction draws upon a resource of dialogic contraction: counter, signalizing the incompatibility, based upon an authorial frame developed in the BASE, between the behavior of a social actor and his/her belonging to the group linked to the established property.
