On the pronominal status of ‘a gente’ and cliticization

This paper aims to focus on the controversy about the pronominal status of ‘a gente’ in Brazilian Portuguese, started by Taylor (2009). Assuming the directionality of grammaticalization as directionality of syntactic movements (ROBERTS; ROUSSOU, 2003), the cline “a gente> a’ent> ent” is presented as evidence of movement from N to D. Supposing the directionality is an implicational scale, the cliticization of ‘a gente’ implies pronominalization.
