Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze how the novel The ambassadors, published in 1903 by the American author Henry James (1843-1916), relates the narrative category of space to Lewis Lambert Strether’s epiphany based on some literary concepts conceived by Osman Lins (1976), Iuri Lotman (1978) and James Joyce (1963). We will attempt to show in what manner the revelation of truth is connected to the external space illuminated by the natural light of an inn, conveniently named Cheval Blanc, and harmonizes with the steps of the epiphanic process (integrity, symmetry and radiance), promoting Strether’s self-consciousness.
