Emergence of the connector [fora que] in Portuguese

This paper aims to describe the emergence of the connector [fora que] in Portuguese, an additive construction used in (extra)clausal contexts. This is an investigation carried out in a diachronic perspective, based on data from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. As a theoretical basis, we used the assumptions of Cognitive-Functional Linguistics (cf. CUNHA et al, 2013; ROSÁRIO & OLIVEIRA, 2016, among others), with a special focus on constructionalization (TRAUGOTT & TROUSDALE, 2021 [2013]; TRAUGOTT, 2022), an approach designed for studies in linguistic change. We used two databases from Corpus do Português: Historic and Now. Altogether, 462 tokens were analyzed, distributed in the different centuries, through a quali-quantitative method. The results point out to the existence of an analogical process for the emergence of the connector [for a que], in which fora, in the function of a denotative word of exclusion, would have been recruited by the [Xque]connect scheme (cf. CEZARIO, SANTOS & SILVA, 2015).
