Abstract

This article aims at presenting and discussing some results obtained in the study
of culturally marked terms in a corpus composed of the Brazilian novel Dois irmãos (2000), by Milton Hatoum, and its translation into English The brothers (2002), by John Gledson. To analyze the culturally marked terms, we adopted the interdisciplinary approach proposed by Camargo (2005, 2007) involving corpus-based translation studies (Baker, 1993, 1995, 1996, 2000) and the studies on cultural domains (NIDA, 1945; AUBERT, 1981, 2006). Considering
other studies involving corpora of translated texts (Baker, 1993; LAVIOSA, 2002; BERBER SARDINHA, 2000, 2004, 2009), we pointed out and discussed some stylistic characteristics of the translator who can create or change representations of Brazilian culture in the target culture. The
methodology used in this research required the program WordSmith Tools (SCOTT, 2007), which provides the necessary tools for data collection in the corpus of translated texts. The results showed that most of cultural markers are inserted in the material and social culture domains, and other markers are inserted in the ecological culture domain, which mirrors the theme of the book.
