Telegraphic style utterances in aphasia: linguistic-cognitive functioning under a linguistic levels integrated view

Absenting and/or substituting words or morphemes that are considered purely grammatical in the discourse is the defining symptom of the so-called “telegraphic speech”. Depending on the theory, the instability with the grammatical resources may be considered a direct consequence of deficits in very specific language levels. In this text, we have addressed a discussion concerning the grammatical functioning aiming, overall, to uphold the notion that all linguistic levels are genetically imbricated in language functioning. It was also aimed to outstand the importance to consider this imbricated nature in order to blueprint a comprehension about linguistic-cognitive phenomena, mainly concerning the phenomena related to the linguistic production in nonfluent cases of aphasia. The reflection was grounded on socio-historic-cultural approach to Neuropsychology; on theoretic-methodological assumptions of Enunciative-Discursive Neurolinguistics and on the principles held by Functional Discourse Grammar.Downloads
