Abstract

This paper aims to contribute to the design of a hierarchical approach to grammaticalization. To do so, its attention focuses on the structure of content interrogatives of Portuguese, specifically on the occurrence of cleft constructions. Based on Functional Discourse Grammar principles (HENGEVELD; MACKENZIE, 2008), four structuring patterns of cleft constructions in content interrogatives are distinguished in the diachrony of Portuguese. This way, it is argued that the emergence of “é que”-constructions and “que”-constructions in Portuguese content interrogatives represents a case of grammaticalization, and it is presented some analytical devices that can hierarchically approach this grammaticalization process in the context of FDG.
